The Fondation Louis Vuitton is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective to Gerhard
Richter, showcasing the work of one of the most important contemporary artists in all its
breadth. Born in Dresden in 1932, the painter, who fled East Germany for West Germany
in 1961 and has lived and worked in Cologne for many years, has explored the boundaries
between painting, photography, and sculpture like few others.
The exhibition brings together around 270 works from the years 1962 to 2024 – including
iconic oil paintings, delicate glass and steel sculptures, pencil and ink drawings,
watercolors, and overpainted photographs. For the first time, the show offers such a
comprehensive overview of Richter's oeuvre and illuminates the conceptual depth and
media diversity of his work. Despite his worldwide acclaim, the artist remains true to his
convictions: for him, the real work always takes place in the studio.

Die Fondation Louis Vuitton widmet Gerhard Richter eine umfassende Retrospektive, die
das Werk eines der bedeutendsten Künstler der Gegenwart in seiner ganzen Spannweite
zeigt. Der 1932 in Dresden geborene Maler, der 1961 aus der DDR nach Westdeutschland
floh und seit vielen Jahren in Köln lebt und arbeitet, hat wie kaum ein anderer die Grenzen
zwischen Malerei, Fotografie und Skulptur ausgelotet.
Rund 270 Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1962 bis 2024 vereint die Ausstellung – darunter
ikonische Ölgemälde, filigrane Glas- und Stahlskulpturen, Bleistift- und
Tuschezeichnungen, Aquarelle sowie übermalte Fotografien. Die Schau bietet erstmals
einen so umfassenden Überblick über Richters Schaffen und verdeutlicht die konzeptuelle
Tiefe und mediale Vielfalt seines Werks. Trotz weltweiter Anerkennung bleibt der Künstler
seiner Haltung treu: Die eigentliche Arbeit findet für ihn stets im Atelier statt.
